Many people these days are feeling hopeless. The US election is such a shit show. The news is full of badness. Truly speaking, this is the case MOST of the time, but still these weeks leading up to the election seem especially bad. If you were an alien from another planet watching TV on earth, you would quickly come to the conclusion that we were a very sick, unhappy race of beings.
And in many cases, we are.
To be okay today, we need to either completely tune out everything that’s going on around us and/or shut off our internal reactions to it. Just look at the pharmaceutical industry and the amount of mood-altering medications dispensed. Currently the use of pain medication in the US is greater than the use of tobacco products.
The people that I work with want to be better than okay. The people I work with want to be truly happy, so for them, there is a high bar to hurdle. For people to be truly happy today they need to do some pretty serious self-work. To be able to be aware of what’s going on around, connected to the world around them, and still open-hearted, alive and optimistic, they need to put themselves through some training, they need to have support and practices to help them keep the doors of their goodness open.
This work is what I call the Radical Happiness work. It’s about learning how to be happy. It sounds funny but it’s true if you think about it. We know how to be PLEASED. We know how to feel happy when things are going our way. But few among our herd know how to to be happy and stay strong and on course in life when things are not going the way we want them to go. Radical Happiness is the path of people who have been through some shit.
Radical Happiness is a standard. Being happy and fully alive is our standard, regardless of the challenges we face.
Radical Happiness is the path for people who have some gift to give, some love they they feel they MUST give their world. Rarely is it automatic that people today are able to do this: create a vision for their life and just live it. We are bound. We are bound by our inner limitations and we are bound by the limiting group-think of a drugged up, depressed, distracted society. That’s why I call it radical. We need to fight a little bit for Radical Happiness. We need to tear ourselves free.
When we were kids, we discovered the Hardcore Punk scene of the 1980’s. Bands like Black Flag and Minor Threat were making fast, loud, brutally honest music while bands like Katrina and the Waves were making saccharin sweet pop hits . The hardcore movement gave a voice to us disaffected kids that didn’t feel like “Walking on Sunshine.” These days, the path of Radical Happiness has a similar mission. In 2016, if we want to rise above the contemporary standard for being half-alive and not-very-happy, we need to go against the grain.
Here are a few simple steps to get into this process (I promise it doesn’t not include shaving your head).
- Wake Up – The first step is simply to become aware of where you’re at. Give yourself a score from 1-10 of how happy and free you are. How happy are you to get out of bed in the morning? How in love are you with your current life? How much are you “there” in your life, with your loved ones, etc.? I like to have people consider their death. How do you want to be on your death bed? How do you want to live out your (very limited) remaining years. I like there to be some pressure. Otherwise, people will put it off and wait. Don’t wait to make yourself happy. Wake up and get to work!
- Make a Pledge – Once you’ve determined the importance of this work, it’s time to make a decision – a solemn oath to the universe that you’re not going to waste any more time. No matter what it takes, you’re going to embrace your life, you’re going to get yourself ready to go for it in every way.
- Get Support – It’s important to realize that, although you might be unique, you’re not alone on this path. There are books and podcasts and people out there doing the work. On one hand, we’re in a dark time. From another perspective, there have never been so many people doing deep work on themselves. Our training programs and retreats are great resources for getting the support you need. The content and work we do, of course, is powerful and effective, but there is also the added bonus of connecting with other souls who are also waking up and raising their vibration. Also, I should mention there is a ton of Grace in this work. Our Universe is magnificent and it wants it’s creations to be magnificent. When we take steps toward our greatness, our efforts are ALWAYS matched by the power of Grace.
- Get to Work – Become your own project. Decide how you want to be and how you want to to live and get after it! Determine your strengths and weaknesses, and make your life a masterpiece.
The thing about this work is, the happiness comes right away. It’s not just that you get to be Radically Happy AFTER your life has become a masterpiece. It’s immediate. As soon as you start waking up, you get to enjoy the process. And it’s not like you’re ever “done”. It’s a lifestyle of excellence. It’s a way of living where you’re constantly refining your vision, deepening your experience of self-love, and offering your gift to the world.
But NOW is the time to start if you need to start.
And if you’ve already started NOW is the time to re-commit!
