I know….change your mind, change your heart, change your life. It’s a mantra I’ve been repeating for the past 20+ years that I’ve been teaching people to meditate. “Just meditate,” the idea goes, “and everything will be better.” But this is rarely the case. Partly because meditation alone can rarely really change you and also because it’s hard to learn to meditate in the best way on your own. Don’t give up! But also don’t be naive. There are three main things you need to keep in mind before you try the “just meditate” cure-all-miracle-drug:
- Most People Need More. Most people who want to make a deep change can benefit from having a meditation practice. And the practice can be a crucial tool. But…most people need to include other changes like changing what they’re doing with their physical body, or their consumption habits (food, drugs, TV, internet). Also, it helps to have professional support like the private sessions we offer. I meet with people one-on-one via Skype and help them to understand exactly what they’re aiming their meditation arrow at and how to ensure it hits its mark. If you’re stuck in some mess, simply trying to “sit it out” for 20 minutes a day is probably not going to do much more than make you feel a little self-righteous.
- It’s Not As Easy As It Looks. You see a beautiful yoga teacher sitting in a perfect cross-legged posture with a beneficent look on her face. Below the picture there’s some writing, “There’s no place like OM”, or “Just BREATHE!“. She’s sitting by the seashore, or maybe in a zen temple somewhere. It sounds good. It looks good. But it’s almost NEVER that easy. And often, those pictures are staged. There are thousands of good ways to meditate, and to really get into most of them, you need some introduction, some initiation, some training. Sometimes a lot, sometimes just a little, but it rarely works when people try to just DIY it. Don’t assume that meditation sucks if your attempts at it have been boring or dry or ineffective. Chances are, you’re just doing it wrong. I know that’s not a very new-age thing to say, but it’s true. Boots are great for hiking. But if you try using the wrong size boots, or put them on the wrong feet, or have the wrong boots for your terrain, you might come away feeling like “boots suck.” Get help with your meditation. YogaGlo has a million of my meditation videos. That’s a good place to start. Then let me know and I can train you personally to get you sighted in even deeper.
- It Takes A Minute. Actually, it takes a long minute. If you get your practice dialed in correctly, and you have the other supports in place you need, you should experience an instant positive effect. But don’t get discouraged if your deeper transformation takes a little while longer to kick in. In an age of quick fixes and chronic attention deficit, this might sound like bad news, but when it comes to lasting transformation, you need to hurry up and get to work, and then slow down and be patient while the work starts to work.
If it seems like I am schilling my training programs and courses, I am. Well, at least a little bit. I do what I do because people need it and it helps. Some of my training programs cost a lot of money. Some are nearly free. But I am confident that we have something for you if you are looking to make a move, change-it-up, get through a tough transition, or enter the heart of the Divine.
The point is, don’t do it alone. And don’t be discouraged by the fluffy affirmationistas. There’s an ancient tradition of this work. It works. If you work it.
